Land of Leeghwater

16th August, 2025

In early August six Midweekers women travelled to Alkmaar to join members from ARZV for a day rowing expedition forming part of the 2025 Dutch celebrations in commemoration of the 450th of the birth of Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater; the Dutch mill designer and engineer who became a leading figure in the land reclamation, dyke and waterway construction which shapes the landscape of the region.

It was a 28km fun rowing experience with members from various other clubs through beautiful waterways, which included two locks, an inland lake and the small canals of the historic village of De Rijp where Leeghwater was born.

As usual, great hospitality from our friends in Alkmaar continued the following day when we rowed in two quads around the canals and waterways of the city, with ice creams in the boats followed by a windmill tour, (we all want to stay there next trip!) and a relaxed late afternoon meal in the town.
