involved. The scheme is working Dragon Boats : Andy Ursell organised a Minerva based team to take part in the British Heart Foundation Charity event on 4th July. Despite most of the crew being novices in this type of boat we were successful in our first two races and made it to the final as third fastest time of the day. The final against two far more experienced teams was much closer than expected with the Minerva crew - Centipede on Acid pulling away at the halfway point of the race, unfortunately we faded towards the finish and came a very close third. Andy's next event will be the Stourhead fundraising event, male scullers required to row people across lake. Coate Water - 8 May 2004 3 Minerva entries. J16 4+ of Adam Mackay, Jimmie Lister, Stuart Rich, Chris Cooling with Miles Coverdale cox; J Novice 4x+ of Tom Adams, Ben Berge, Peter Oldham, Adam Manhi with Miles Coverdale cox (again); J16 1x of Richard Wiles-Teoh. 4+ and 4x+ all from Beechen Cliff School; 1x King Edwards 4+ in semi-final raced Monkton Combe A crew, who were half of their J16 eight. This was the first sweep oar race for the Minerva crew and they showed their lack of experience in the first half of the course where they lost over 2 lengths to Monkton. After that, they lost nothing more but could make no impression on Monkton. The quad had a straight final against Monmouth RC and Hereford. They gained immediately on Hereford and were just showing ahead of Monmouth when the Monmouth crew broke a scull and dropped out. Minerva then drew steadily away from Hereford, leading by clear water at halfway and winning by over 2 lengths. Weather warm wet and windless (nearly). Well run regatta, despite rain. Arnold Learn to Row Course 8th-9th May. Course was a success and well attended. Contact Club Captain for more details. 21e AA Race - Alkmaar. The Men's Veteran 8 of Mike Ashman, William Wadsworth, Chris (Apollo) Fry, Mark Smith, Tony Gray, Colin Williams, Mark (Eros) Melbourne and Guy Troup - coxed by Andy (I only weigh 14 stone!) Ursell were successful in winning the Challenge shield by defeating a powerful Alkmaar eight by over 6 seconds. Click here for a full report. Praise for Minerva Youngsters. Five juniors raced at the prestigious Junior Inter Regional Regatta, which took place at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham last weekend. Richard Wiles Teoh, who attends King Edward's School beat stiff opposition to win a place to race the J16 single scull for the region. He finished with a very creditable ninth overall. Also representing the club and region was the J16 Quadruple scull of Adam Manhi, Ben Berger, Tom Adams and Wiles Teoh who stepped in for Peter Oldham, all of whom are from Beechen Cliff School. The Quad have had an exceptional year's rowing, culminating in this much deserved honour, they also finished ninth overall. Coach Arnold (The Terminator) Cooke said "We are very proud of the juniors". They have been training hard and have shown that they have the commitment and drive to represent the South West. To cap it all Richard and the Quad were recognised at the Annual Dinner and Prize giving, winning best junior and most improved crew respectively. Many thanks to those that organised the evening, it was a great success. The food was excellent, as were the Band. The venue this year was a change from previous years and was well received, we hope to use the same venue next year. And for those of you that didn't attend, I can tell you that the GODs felt at home under the gaze of Bath's International elite. Click on the Picture Gallery link to see who was there. |
