Alkmaar - ARZV.
As part of the twinning arrangement between the Cities of Bath and Alkmaar in
the Netherlands, Minerva is twinned with Alkmaar’s rowing club ARZV.
Alkmaar is situated in North-West Holland, approximately 30 miles from
Amsterdam. The city has a population of around 96,000 and is best known for
its cheese market, which operates every Friday morning between April and
September.
Bath’s links with Alkmaar began just before the end of the Second World War,
when fund-raising events were held to support the citizens of Alkmaar who
were impoverished by the conflict. The first official visit to Bath by
dignitaries from Alkmaar took place in 1946, and formal twinning links were
established in May 1990; the twinning relationship between the 2 rowing clubs
has been going for around 25 years.
