The history behind the Challenge shield has blurred over the last 15 years, the format hasn't.  Traditionally we visit Alkmaar each April to race in the dreaded AA Race, which is rowed over 6500m for men and 5000 for women. In turn Alkmaar come to Bath in the Autumn to take part in a low key head, normally run over 3000m.

The challenge shield has been won equally by men and women from both clubs, rowing in Eights, Fours, Quads and Pairs.

The most enjoying part of this tradition is not the rowing but the attempts by the hosts to sabotage the visiting crews. Over the years this has been 30k cycle rides, roller blading, sculling around Alkmaar, long distance treasure hunts, scooter rides, cider drinking, boomerang throwing and visits to the BierMuseum. Needless to say we have had much fun over the years and made some very good friends. All members of the club should grab the chance to visit Alkmaar at least once, it is addictive.

P.S. The rowing is fun but not essential.
